Jennifer Palmer is an investigative reporter covering education for Oklahoma Watch, a nonprofit, nonpartisan news outlet with offices in Norman and Oklahoma City. She has written a variety of watchdog stories on education topics including school choice, lunch shaming, gifted education, literacy and reading, and higher education. Her work has brought reforms like a new law on virtual charter school attendance policies and improved safeguards to prevent discrimination by private schools that accept tax credit scholarships. A reporter since graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 2003, she's covered crime, courts, breaking news, schools, retail, and business, but the watchdog role suits her best. She was named Best Reporter and  took first place for education reporting in 2018 by the Society of Professional Journalists Oklahoma Chapter.

Jennifer will tell us about how she got where she is today, starting as a columnist at the OU Daily to covering crime and courts at a scrappy weekly in New Mexico, to this full-time beat reporting at an investigative news outlet. She'll tell us how she takes a story from idea to published. Also, she will discuss: What is watchdog journalism? What is nonprofit news? And why does it matter?
